By Jan Gordon:
We have all read the papers and watch the news and it’s not pretty, we’ve hit the bottom and like everything else, there’s no place to go but up! We have to have a breakdown before we can breakthrough. There are many people who see opportunity in down times, and it’s important to focus on the solution rather than all the negativity that’s all around us. No matter where you are in your life or your business, you have expertise and experience that would inspire, inform and support others. This is your social media marketing genius waiting to come out! There are people out there who want to hear what you have to say! You do have opinions about current events that effect your business and life in general, you do have information that is unique to you, we want to hear from you. Don’t worry about “the how”, things will fall into place once you make the commitment to draw from that experience and communicate it to others. This is an excellent way to reach people and build a community of likeminds who can create value for you too.
Today there are social networks like Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter and many others where you can build relationships that can lead to collaboration, new business opportunities, inside information about your industry and things you can’t even imagine. It’s all out there waiting for you to take the next step and become involved in the new social media marketing wave.
Serendipity is my favorite word and through blogging and social media networking, people are showing up with opportunities that never would have happened if I wasn’t out there participating in this very exciting time on the web. I founded Cyberland in 1994 and have watched the web grow from its infancy. I am excited and absolutely amazed at what’s happening online today and all the wonderful surprises that await me and you online.
I know you’re ready for a big change in 2009, Tuesday is the inauguration of president, Barack Obama and we will all experience history and welcome him and his family and be able to talk about it through our blogs and in our social networks with all our friends and business associates. Social networks will allow us to be connected like a family. It reminds us that we’re all together in this world and what we can’t do alone, we can do together and Tuesday brings us a celebration of history in the making. Doing business is no exception, marketing with social media can be a bridge back to solution, opportunity and profits. It’s time for you to participate and become part of our community at Cyberland, and on the internet. We want to hear from you. Change has come to America and to you!
I’m willing to go out there and do whatever it takes to create change and prosper, no matter what the economy looks like. I’m going to make it a great year, what about you? I want to inspire, inform and help you to create a great presence on the web. My team of interactive media experts and I want to help you with your online marketing whether you already have a presence and need a tune up or are just beginning.

Have you ever thought of partnering up with a business who has a similar target market but who doesn’t compete with you? Your choices of who to partner up with is as limited as your imagination. Al Lautenslager writes in his article in Entrepreneur Magazine .
I have always loved collaborating, brainstorming and working with partners who have a compatible business that provides outstanding service. When you think of all the possibilities, new distribution, new clients or customers, new ideas, it’s exciting!
Social media allows you to build community around common interests, values, public service, hobbies and what better way to find a “power partner” to grow your business? Being a pioneer on the web in 1994, helping companies form such alliances, I have had the great fortune to build long lasting relationships in different industries that my clients have benefited from. I won’t hesitate to pick up the phone and plug them into someone I’ve known for years. They might not be the ideal partner for this particular client, but as Steven Covey said in “7 Habits of Highly Successful People”, one of my all time favorite books, “everyone has a circle of influence, those people have circles of influence”. I’m sure you get my point.
No matter how bad the news gets on any given day, I try and live by these words from a song I heard in Spamalot a few weeks ago, “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. This is a great way to keep focusing on solutions to grow your business, reinvent your career or whatever your particular need is at this time. The point is, you don’t have to do anything alone, there are so many wonderful, inspiring and enterprising people on the web, and now you can find them through blogging and social media.
We’re about to enter 2009, just think of all those incredible people you will meet, it’s like serendipity, my favorite word. You never know what’s around the next corner, no matter where you are, there are so many opportunities just waiting for you!
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends, the most precious gifts of all.

Interesting post by Peter Kafka that talks about all the buzz on Twitter, after Motrin ran an advertisement that was so offensive that so many people complained that Motrin finally took their ad off their site and made a public apology.
